Summer TV Preview: What makes Becca Kufrin’s The Bachelorette different?
The show returns on Monday, May 28 on ABC with new episodes, and for the network there’s probably a level of excitement that they haven’t had for a season in a while. after all, they haven’t had a story quite like Becca Kufrin’s ever on the show — the only person who has gone through something even remotely similar to her in this franchise is Melissa Rycroft, and she went on to do Dancing with the Stars instead of her own solo version of the franchise. There is a great story here and there’s probably a terrible drinking game revolving around how many times Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s name is said in the first episode.
We have little doubt that the premiere episode is going to get great ratings, but beyond that, it’s really up to the contestants. Becca is a dynamic-enough lead, but hopefully the show finds a way to ensure that her personality isn’t completely eaten alive by what happened to her on The Bachelor this past season. This show ultimately is not really about the person handing out roses as it is the drama and the charisma of the people vying for love/Instagram followers/whatever it is. The crop of guys this season includes someone in a chicken suit and also someone who shows up the first night with a cardboard cut-out of Arie.
Should you watch? – It really depends on if you liked the past few seasons since this one is basically the same exact thing only with a different person at the center of it. Format-wise this franchise never changes and it’s silly to think that they will think year just because of Becca’s story. There are typically some super-entertaining moments on these shows from the first night until around episode 5 or 6, but once the lead gets around to right before hometown dates the action slows to a crawl. Hometown dates are moderately entertaining, and then the final two episodes are often boring unless someone pulls an Arie and absolutely sends the country into hysterics.
