Supergirl season 4: What does the move to Sunday mean?

Supergirl season 4

Earlier this week, the surprising news was revealed that Supergirl season 4, after airing on Mondays for its entire run, is going to be taking off to Sunday nights. With that, it will help to lead off a new lineup that also includes the reboot of Charmed.

It’s fair to call this one of the biggest experiments within the world of The CW in years, largely because of the fact that this is the first time in a long time that the network has even opted to program on the night. Their viewers are not familiar with shows airing on the night so it may take somewhat of an adjustment period. Yet, the network probably felt comfortable enough to move Supergirl there since they felt like viewers would follow. While it doesn’t have the largest total audience on The CW, Supergirl fans are among the most loyal. Beyond that, we also feel like there is a pretty big hole in the market there for a show like this. Think about what other networks are doing at this point come the fall — NBC has football, CBS has a new show in God Friended Me, and ABC is looking away from scripted programming altogether. Fox has The Simpsons, but that is a very different sort of audience.

Ultimately, for comic-book fans and for women, there isn’t much in the way of programming that is out there on Sundays at this time, and this is what may make this spot ideal for Supergirl. Its biggest competition may come via Outlander when it premieres on Starz come November, provided that it airs at 8:00 p.m. again. (Even still, Outlander fans can watch it early via the app.)

What Supergirl is presented with in this timeslot is an opportunity to potentially expand their live audience, and such things are really rare in the TV world. One of the things we’ve wondered about the past two years is how it would fair away from the likes of The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, Gotham/Lucifer, and so much more. This has been one of the most competitive spots out there.

So long as Supergirl draws around a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic on average, we do think it can win in this timeslot for a rather long time.
