Shadowhunters season 3 episode 9 review: Simon’s heartbreaking hour
Let’s start things off in this review by talking about Simon and what happened with his sister Becky — Heidi tormented him by visiting his family and, in turn, tormented them. She realized that the only way to get through to him on a deep-seeded emotional level was to go and wreck the one thing that Simon held closer to his heart than almost anything else.
After what Heidi did, it’s pretty darn clear that she got precisely what she wanted — Simon was forced to drink his own sister’s blood and in the aftermath of that, his family considers him a monster and they no longer want anything to do with him. This, moving forward, puts him in a rather enormous/devastating predicament where he doesn’t get to be around the people he loves anymore.
He does have others that he cares about and they are family; yet, they’re family in a different way.
Family was an interesting theme throughout this episode for a number of different reasons. Most notably, we saw some of this play out with Magnus as he started to realize that regardless of whether or not he wanted it to be this way, the only way in which he was going to be able to get the magic together to defeat Jace was through his father Asmodeus. He had attempted to make a move with the warlocks but soon after that, received a rather unfortunate reminder that Lorenzo Rey wasn’t altogether happy with that idea. With that, he’s now screwed and left with very few other opts.
Meanwhile, there were also some other troubles that we saw over the course of the episode for Clary, who found herself captured and put into a position where Valentine of all people was revived … even if it was temporary. While the good news for now seems to be that she isn’t set to immediately die at the hands of the Clave, she does have to contend with the fact that Jace is still the Owl and that Lilith wants Valentine’s flesh to suit her own purposes. We cannot forget here that she’s still intent on using Jonathan in order to kick off her next phase in destroying the earth.
CarterMatt Verdict
An excellent episode of Shadowhunters memorable most of all thanks to Alberto Rosende, who delivered start to finish with a heartbreaking take on a character in the midst of desperation. While we know that there were other parts of this episode that had higher stakes, none were as effective when it comes to emotionally gutting us as a viewer of the show.
