Agents of SHIELD season 6 to air in summer 2019
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, ABC programming head Channing Dungey confirmed the news, while also saying that this was a network decision and not something necessarily linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When you think about it, though, it does make a great deal of sense for the network to take their time when it comes to releasing some more episodes. Given how Avengers: Infinity War ended, it would’ve been hard to do another Agents of SHIELD season with the entire cast. That was a devastation conclusion to the movie and season 6 will likely pick up on the other side of that.
Beyond just this, though, ABC also confirmed that season 6 will not necessarily be the final one — as a matter of fact, going into the summer may help to actually keep it around longer. There are lower expectations and ABC seems to recognize that the show’s real value at this point is in international sales and DVR ratings. Here is what Dungey had to say via TVLine:
“What we’ve discovered is that we have a very loyal and passionate fan base for S.H.I.E.L.D. The show does incredibly well for us in delayed viewing … By putting it in the summer, we’re going to be able to ‘super-serve’ the fan base that loves that show and hopefully give it an opportunity to continue on longer than we would if it was [scheduled] in-season.”
Agents of SHIELD is airing thirteen episodes for the sixth season, which means that the writers are clearly going to have plenty of time in order to tell a creative, interesting, and concentrated story that is different from anything that we’ve seen on the show before.
