How can Chicago Fire season 7 address Dawsey problem?

Dawsey

Mrs. Carter: Based on the events of last night’s Chicago Fire finale, it’s basically Code Red for Dawsey fans.

Throughout the episode, it was pretty clear that these two characters were in trouble. Dawson wanted to conceive a baby herself, but Casey was concerned that doing so would lead to her harming herself after discovering a previously-unknown medical issue. Following this, Casey tried to look into adoption behind her back… something that she wasn’t interested in doing. After learning about what Casey did, Dawson then decided to explore a possible stay in Puerto Rico behind his back. This isn’t leading anywhere good for these two since these are the types of decisions that can easily crack the strongest relationship foundations.

I love Dawsey, and if you love Chicago Fire there’s a good chance that you do, too. What these two have right now is a failure to communicate. Dawson’s always had a tough time saying what she’s going to do before she actually does it, and for Casey he is starting to realize that some things about her he used to be more accepting of he’s not okay with anymore.

Chicago Fire season 7 can easily fix much of what ails these two, but it’s clear there is a larger problem: Monica Raymund’s future on the show. How can Chicago Fire plan a story for her when they don’t know if she’s returning? As reported last night, Raymund is not under contract yet for season 7 and if she doesn’t renew, that poses a big problem. Can you really have Dawsey without Dawson? I don’t think so, and a Raymund exit forces the producers into a tough spot: Either continue to focus on Casey without her there and act as though the two are still going strong (kind of like what they are doing on Hawaii Five-0 with Kono and Adam), or find some sort of way to eventually write Casey out of the show to go and join her. The only other possible solution here is that you split the two up and I can’t imagine some of the fan revolts if something like that happens. Sometimes, the business of TV does get in the way of the creative story-telling elements and that could happen here.

The hardest part of the Dawsey story entering this cliffhanger is not so much what’s written in the story; instead, it’s the fear of the unknown. How Chicago Fire writes around an issue that is not in their control is difficult. I would love them to keep the soul and the passion of Dawsey alive no matter what Raymund decides. If she leaves, don’t punish this couple or the fans for it and find a different way for them to work. Maybe that poses a problem down the road if Casey continues to be there without his wife, but that’s an issue for the future. For the present, breaking them up is not a move that is going to make anyone out there altogether happy.
