Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 23 review: Did April survive?
As a matter of fact, amidst the swelling music and tender moments, there were certainly times during this episode we thought April wasn’t going to make it. Yet, that is precisely what she did. Due to some skillful surgery from the doctors, a little bit of luck, and what April would like to think of as plenty of prayer, she ended up making it through at the end of the episode. She is okay and so is Matthew, but they still have a ways to go until they are fully recovered.
One of the things that the writers did so masterfully within this episode was find a way to scale out some of the characters learning about April’s condition, whether it be Alex, Meredith, or of course Jackson, who was devastated. He spent so much of his time with April shying away from religion but even by the end of it, he found herself praying for him, as well. April’s going to pull through, but her future still remains unclear given the fact that Sarah Drew is leaving the series. That isn’t changing despite the fact that April pulled through tonight.
As for what else we had a chance to see over the course of the hour, there was some significant movement in the story regarding Arizona’s impending exit. She knew that she was planning to leave at the end of the season so she could be closer to Sofia in New York; yet, she got an opportunity within this episode in order to figure out a different way to move forward. Thanks in part to the return of Dr. Herman to the series, she now has a chance to depart to New York to start a new institute with her. Could this actually be a happy ending for her? It’s hard to say that when you think about the fact that this happy ending includes her saying goodbye — still, this could be a great next chapter of her life.
CarterMatt Verdict
As a whole, Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 23 delivered on the promise of bringing you something emotional that made you question whether or not April Kepner would pull through. While there could have been more stories mixed in for some of the supporting characters, we do still feel nonetheless happy with the end results. Now, we just have to wait for the finale…
