Saturday Night Live music: Childish Gambino performs ‘This is America,’ new song

This weekend’s new episode of Saturday Night Live was certainly different for a number of different reasons. While the host and musical guest were the same person, they each have different stage names. As a rapper, Donald Glover is Childish Gambino and he is certainly one of the best ones out there. If this was the only thing that he did, we have a feeling that this would still be enough to make him into a superstar. Yet, this is only just one dimension of the incredibly multifaceted performer that he is.

We know that Glover / Gambino love to try out new things, and with that in mind we’re really impressed that he decided to come out tonight and perform a brand-new song. We don’t know a whole lot about the song at the moment, other than of course the fact that it was fast-paced, energetic, and above all very good. This is a song that we would have no problem listening to many times over. We know that Gambino is a fantastic rapper, but there’s something nice when he busts out that singing voice, as well. It’s reminiscent in some ways of Bruno Mars with the style of performance and also the way in which the melody flows.

All in all, this new song may be our favorite one that we’ve heard on SNL in the past month or two.

Second song – This is a recently-released track from Gambino entitled “This Is America” that mixed back in some of his hip-hop skills. How we best describe this performance is it allowed us to see even more of his versatility as an artist, something we appreciate and also something that we get a chance to see a whole lot more of when it comes to live television.
