Chicago PD season 5: Could Olinsky actually die?

Elias Koteas

Is Elias Koteas leaving Chicago PD following the events of Wednesday night’s new episode. Judging from what we saw tonight, there is certainly a reason to be afraid.

In the closing minutes of season 5 episode 21, we ended up seeing Elias Koteas’ character bleeding out in jail after being stabbed there — we’ve already described what happened (and assigned most of the blame to Voight) in our full review for this episode. Now, we want to do more of our part to figure out just where this particular story could be going from here.

Update Olinsky’s fate revealed here

Leading into the episode tonight, there are no photos present of Koteas in the finale episode “Homecoming,” though that could very easily be just a result of the producers not wanting to give anything away. Is it likely that Olinsky makes it through this? We have to think so, largely because it feels like sooner or later a prison guard is going to find him. If there is a place to get stabbed and hope to survive, you have to think that this particular prison staff would be prepared for it — provided that they care. Luckily for Olinsky, his particular prison guard seemed to be fond of him and interested in protecting him. He gave him as much advice as he possibly could the moment that he came into the penitentiary.

One of the larger questions that we’re left to wonder, as we believe that he will likely survive, is what comes next for Olinsky even in the event that he’s found not guilty and gets out of prison — will he even want to be with Intelligence anymore? He’s close to retirement and while he may be loyal to Hank, loyalty has its limits. Voight didn’t succeed in helping him avoid sitting in a cell and Olinsky already gave up quite a bit in order to protect him. Olinsky is going to have to make some extremely difficult decisions, provided that he lives long enough to make them.

Remember that there is no official Chicago PD season 6 renewal at the moment on NBC; we do think that it is going to happen, but even after that happens there will almost certainly be plenty of questions to go along with it.

Koteas has been a part of Chicago PD throughout the series’ run — he’s an exemplary actor who does a great job in this role, and with that in mind, we would like to imagine that he will continue to play it for some time still.
