Shadowhunters season 3 episode 7 review: The story of Maia and Jordan

Shadowhunters season 3 episode 7

While there were many storylines within Shadowhunters season 3 episode 7 that fell very much in mind with what we’ve seen so far this season, we also had a chance to get something deeper, something a little more personal and intriguing.

We’re speaking here in particular about the history of Maia with Jordan Kyle, a man who turned her into a werewolf and then hid in fear of the aftermath. Through most of this episode we had a chance to see the journey of Maia in the past, whether it be her first meeting Jordan to how the two eventually broke apart amidst his dream to go to Fiji and start a life with her. Jordan had been living with Simon and keeping many a secret — some of them he is still keeping in turn.  Maia didn’t let Jordan abandon Simon at the end of the episode much like he did her — he’s staying put, but that doesn’t mean that he and Maia are going to be having a lot of friendly conversations. There are still many hurt feelings and with that, many problems that are likely going to be coming up.

Meanwhile, for many other Shadowhunters tonight the goal was fairly simple: Try to find a way to bring back Jace. For the time being, it appears as though some of our heroes were successful — at least to a certain extent. The character was trapped in part thanks to Magnus in the closing minutes, but he was not entirely cured of being the Owl in the process. Step by step, right? This was a pretty intense, brutal story that brought us to this point as Jace tracked down many of the Shadowhunters in their hopes to find out how to resolve his affliction.

In the aftermath of his capture, though, we don’t exactly think that anyone is altogether safe. Clary is in trouble, Magnus and Alec are going to be targets, and even while Luke and Simon may have scored a small victory of their own in the battle against Lilith, we don’t think that she is anywhere near close to giving up.

CarterMatt Verdict

As entertaining as the whole story of Jace was tonight, we actually think the best part of what we saw tonight was getting a chance to see so much of Maia and Jordan’s backstory. There is something about a show like this, one that is often very big and broad with its storytelling, going small and intimate that remains incredibly compelling. Shadowhunters season 3 episode 7 tonight was hopeful at times and emotional at others as we ultimately saw the journey of Maia into the supernatural world — to think, she started things off as a regular girl who just happened to meet a friendly surfer on the beach.
