Could The Big Bang Theory season 13 still happen? Latest discussions

The Big Bang Theory season 13

Is there still a small chance at there being a Big Bang Theory season 13 in the future? While we recognize we’re looking more than a year into the future here, it’s something that is very much worth discussing — after all, there may be some executives doing the same thing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there have been conversations among some at Warner Bros. TV and CBS about extending the series’ run beyond the upcoming twelfth season (premiering this fall), though doing so would probably require extending the contracts of the entirety of the cast past where they are right now. While The Big Bang Theory may be an expensive show to produce due to cast salaries, it is also a veritable goldmine for both the network and the studio; the live+same-day ratings may now be what they once were, it does rake in an enormous amount of cast through repeat airings, online streams, syndication, and even a wide array of merchandise. It’s one of the most-successful comedies of the past couple of decades for all of these reasons and it’s understandable that the powers-that-be would want to keep it going.

As for whether or not the show’s cast and crew feel the same way, that’s something to take a wait-and-see approach on. Series star Johnny Galecki suggested earlier this year that season 12 could be the last and executive producer Steve Holland recently told the aforementioned publication that he is planning for now as though season 12 is going to be the end of the road:

“We know we have season 12; we don’t know what we have beyond there … Our goal of doing season 12 is to not leave anything on the table. If this is going to be the end, they should tout it as the final season, but I’m not sure when we’ll have a definitive answer on that.”

Our feeling is that if season 12 is the final season, it would behoove CBS to make that announcement over the summer and then give Holland and the writers a fall year to prepare for the end of the road. Twelve years is a long time for a comedy series; it is also how long Two and a Half Men, another show produced by Chuck Lorre, ended up running on the network. There is a parity there that we find quite nice. Also, twelve years of being on the air it’s quite nice; it’s a tremendous run and the show could keep airing, but it’s hard to fault anyone if they were to decide that this is the right time to start packing everything away.
