Outlander – Emmy submissions debate for Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, show itself
With that in mind, we are posing the following question: Provided that the show itself, plus stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, are nominated this summer, what episodes should they ultimately submit for consideration? The procedure is a little bit different for early ballots but once you are nominated, the actor, often with the collaboration of their team and the network/studio, help to determine the best way to promote themselves to the Emmys further. In the case of acting nominees, a single episode is considered for consideration — that makes it easier for voters to watch. Meanwhile, shows themselves get the luxury of submitting six total episodes.
Everyone at Outlander has plenty of time to make these decisions — after all, nobody is even nominated yet! We just want to play this out in the event they are on the basis of optimism. Below, you’ve got what our personal choices would be.
Outlander, Outstanding Drama Series – “The Battle Joined,” “Of Lost Things,” “Freedom and Whisky,” “A. Malcolm,” “First Wife,” and “Eye of the Storm.” This was a challenge trying to narrow the field down to just six episodes, but we personal do feel as though these six installments encapsulate perhaps more than any other some of the wonderful things that we routinely get a chance to see from this show, whether they be exceptional performances, beautiful set design, outstanding costumes, and so much more. They’re some of the strongest episodes that showcase everything that this series can do.
Sam Heughan, Actor in a Drama Series – “Of Lost Things.” This was a surprisingly heated internal debate for us, mostly because of the fact that it makes some sense to want to choose an episode for Heughan where he acts alongside Balfe. Yet, it was hard to ignore the greatness that he puts into this episode emotionally, physically, and psychologically. It’s a tormented side of Jamie that eventually turns personal, introspective, and eventually paternal with the arrival of William. This episode is so rich and full of great moments that it’s impossible to ignore.
Caitriona Balfe, Actress in a Drama Series – “Uncharted.” This was another extremely difficult choice, mostly because we also love “Freedom and Whisky” and “First Wife” for her to an extent that any of these would be great choices. Yet, what makes “Uncharted” an ideal entry is that she has so much total screen time in the episode and, beyond that, does so many different things. There is some comedy in here, a reunion for Claire and Jamie, some especially tender moments, and also plenty of wonderful adventure. You see all sides to Claire here and it’s a wonderful showcase of all Balfe can do.
