Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2 review: Warlock woes and dinner dates

Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2

Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2 offered up a prime example of some of what the show does best: Finding a way to balance out the drama and the danger with serious personal problems.

When it comes to the danger, we simple bring you Lorenzo Rey: The new High Warlock and a man with questionable motives. He’s not anywhere near interested in cooperating with the Shadowhunters and he seems intent on reducing Magnus’ power and influence. With that in mind, we can’t say we are shocked that the character is trying to pin what exactly at his introductory party on Magnus. It was a way to turn more people against him — even though it’s pretty clear still that Magnus really is the right High Warlock for the job. Lilith was working to help decimate the Warlocks’ powers and were it not for him, she may have been successful in causing further chaos throughout the city.

With Alec at his side, Magnus managed to save much of the day — even though Lorenzo Rey ended up taking much of the credit for it instead. Lorenzo’s arrival did lead to another big revelation on the night: Magnus’ father is Asmodeus, one of the most dangerous demons that is out there. He was concerned about Alec holding this against him but this led in turn to one of the better Malec scenes so far this season — Alec showing that he loves him and doesn’t care so much about what his background or legacy is.

Clary and Jace’s dinner date

What did we learn about in one of the more lighthearted stories of the week? It’s really not altogether hard to describe: Jace knows nothing about dinner dates. To go along with that, he also knows very little about how to make casual dinner conversation other than talking about Maia’s tattoo, which he only knows about because he slept together. This also ended up being an awkward dinner date with Simon and Maia there just because of the fact that Jace doesn’t know what a reservation is.

Ultimately, Jace was able to win over Clary with another admission of his love for her; yet, that’s not stopping some of the inner demons in his mind and the struggles that are stemming from being brought back.

Your cliffhanger for the week

Apparently, Simon is screwed — some of the wolves (not Luke) decided to send him away and that put the character on the offensive … that is, until he BLASTED one of them away. Does Simon have powers? Consider this a thought for next week.

CarterMatt Verdict

While we would’ve preferred more Izzy tonight, it’s easy to celebrate what Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2 did in the romance department — and also what they brought to the table in terms of a cliffhanger. A nice follow-up to the premiere that introduced one compelling new character in Lorenzo.
