Sandra Oh unsure of eventual Grey’s Anatomy return

Is it possible that Sandra Oh could return to Grey’s Anatomy someday? Absolutely, but it doesn’t appear as though this is something that is strongly on her mind right now. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t actually seem like it’s on her mind at all.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly while promoting her new series Killing Eve, Oh made it clear that she is uncertain as to whether or not she will come back, largely in part because the series did such a worthy job of tying up her story the first go-around:

“I will say it’s hard to beat that ending, because what I also realize is that it keeps it open in so many ways where you can continue on having that relationship with Cristina. I’m not sure. I guess I can’t really answer it either way where I’m sitting right now, because I’m so committed to Eve. The idea of stepping back into the Cristina shoes, it doesn’t feel right to me right now. But honestly, who knows how long Grey’s is gonna go?”

One of the ideas that exists within Grey’s Anatomy still is that Meredith and Cristina do still have conversations, but it’s not necessarily something at the forefront of the show because it doesn’t need to be. Cristina has moved on and there is no conflict there. Sometimes it is better for a show to move on and become something new, and for Oh it has to feel pretty clear that her character has already gotten much of what she could have possibly wanted out of life.

Sometimes, people just come in and out of life. That’s just the way things go, and even if you do still care about somebody that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to end up seeing them again. This is the story from Meredith’s perspective — Cristina was her “person” but in the aftermath of her leaving, she did have to find other ways to persevere.

For us, we obviously do want to see Cristina again someday, even if we are also cognizant of the fact that it may not actually happen until we get around to some sort of finale or other milestone episode down the road.
