Why aren’t there more Chicago Med season 3 crossovers? An explanation
With that being said, there are some reasons why a major crossover event with this show didn’t happen for this season, and much of that starts with a pretty simple issue: The series’ schedule. Because of NBC only giving Chicago Med a 20-episode order and premiering it in late November, there was so much flux that caused it to be difficult for either Chicago PD or Chicago Fire to plan for a show with a somewhat-fluid return date. They could use some of the characters for little arcs here and there but it was difficult to do a whole lot more with any of them.
By the time that Chicago Med did know its overall episode order for the upcoming season, there was another issue that quickly presented itself — there wasn’t a whole lot of time to stage anything. Because Med had a smaller episode count its actors are done filming earlier than the other two shows, which means that they scatter in a lot of different directions. NBC just didn’t give it a great opportunity to be a stable show because of their attempt to launch Law & Order True Crime — ironically, Chicago Med has actually been a more stable performer in this same exact timeslot.
As for whether or not we anticipate this changing for season 4, the short answer is “maybe” since it feels like Chicago Med has better earned its spot on the schedule … though NBC could still opt if they choose to shift it around again. We just think that it’s too much to ask fans to have to wait another year without some sort of major crossover to take shape.
