Sean Bean’s inspiration to Game of Thrones came in many forms

Sean Bean was an enormous part of the development of Game of Thrones, and some of that seems to go beyond the fact that he played a character in Ned Stark who was the patriarch for a family who are all enormous movers and shakers in the world now.

As it turns out, much of Bean’s impact on Game of Thrones long-term had a little bit more to do with his voice — his accent was apparently so distinct that the producers wanted to use it at virtually every opportunity that they possibly can. His voice became the launching pad for everyone else in the north.

Speaking in a new interview with Build Series, here is what Bean had to say on the subject:

“We were doing the [pilot] read-through and the producers and the writers said, ‘Why don’t you just keep your own accent?’ And I said, ‘All right! Good for me.’ … But then, everybody else had to do the same accent [as] me from the Stark family. So I established the way we speak.

“That set the tone for I guess the next seven seasons … They all had to talk like me.”

If Game of Thrones was a different show, maybe there would be a different ending where Bean would make some sort of cameo at the very end of it. This is, after all, something that many shows choose to do within their final seasons! However, Game of Thrones is a show with only a handful of episodes left and with that, very little time to spend on fan service. The best thing that you can really hope for when it comes to the Ned Stark character is that he is featured in one of the upcoming spin-offs that is currently in development. You never quite know with that!

One way or another, Ned’s presence is felt … and not just because he lost his head earlier on in the series’ run.
