Should NCIS: Los Angeles season 10, if renewed, air in new timeslot?
As a matter of fact, it is the ratings drop that is the crux of this article — if there is one thing seemingly hurting NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 at the moment, it is the simple fact that it’s stuck in a not-great timeslot surrounded by shows that don’t have a lot of ratings momentum behind them. In the fall, it lost most of the NFL overrun momentum it would have had via Wisdom of the Crowd, a series that was effectively cancelled last year when CBS declined to order additional episodes. Meanwhile, Madam Secretary after it hasn’t been a strong ratings warrior in some time.
Moving NCIS: Los Angeles back to the 8:00 p.m. timeslot just makes the most sense if we are talking about preserving the series’ long-term future. For starters, you’re avoiding some of the major competition that is out there like The Walking Dead. Meanwhile, in the fall you’ll capture some of the male audience that is still watching from the NFL and 60 Minutes.
Here is the other part of the timeslot swap for season 9 that we absolutely did not understand — if you’re CBS and you have a new show, don’t you want to take advantage of the NCIS: Los Angeles lead-in to the best of your ability. While 60 Minutes may be a strong lead-in in its own right, we think that NCIS: LA is a stronger lead-in when it comes to content. It has a devoted audience and we’ve seen with NCIS proper and Bull how two similar shows airing next to each other can be rather valuable. Heck, we saw that with NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles for many years.
