Absentia season 2 spotlight: Mysterious Big Bad discussion!

Absentia season 2 Big Bad

It’s never too early to start discussing Absentia season 2, right? While Sony / Amazon / other broadcasters have not officially renewed the Stana Katic series yet for additional episodes, we hope that the show is charting in that direction. We’ve spotlighted a number of different characters over the past two weeks and today, we’re doing something a little bit different: Discussing possible villains?

How do you follow up on the first season? Is there a way to match that level of drama and intensity? There are a couple of different ways that the series could choose to go about things — since Emily Byrne is the focus of the series we are in turn telling this story primary through her lens.

1. The new Big Bad isn’t connected to Emily at all – After getting a story in season 1 that was so explicitly connected to Emily in almost every possible way, to us there is something a little more interesting now about getting a story that is a little more separate. See if Emily can adjust back to a reasonably normal life with the FBI and her old career. This is a significant test for her to pass in the event that she ever wants to have the life that she once did back.

Along the way with this case, what you can do is show a little more in terms of how this case impacts Emily on an emotional level, and if there are some other triggers she experiences that question her own stability and fitness to do the job properly. You bring back her demons, but almost in unexpected ways much as you did in the closing minutes of season 1.

2. The Big Bad does have a connection to Emily’s past – There could have been more people involved in the experiments than we were made aware of in season 1. Or, this new adversary could have connections that go even deeper into Emily’s past and family history. The appeal of doing this is that you tie almost the entire show back to Emily and also put her into positions where you question what side she is really on. However, the more you do this and the more it starts to feel like every case is too coincidental. Our feeling is that you make the season 2 Big Bad someone a little more independent of Emily’s past and if you get a season 3, allow yourself to tell a story that brings you a little more back into that space.
