America’s Got Talent season 13: Tyra Banks, Simon Cowell, full judging panel returning

While an America’s Got Talent season 13 renewal was a foregone conclusion (this is one of the most-popular summer shows on the air), NBC made the news official on Wednesday. Not only that, but they confirmed that everyone would return! This means that host Tyra Banks is going to be back for another go-around, with the same going for the judging panel of Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Mel B.

There’s nothing about this news that comes across as shocking. While Tyra had to take on a pretty steep learning curve she figured it out over the course of the season and proved to be a worthy follow-up to Cannon. Meanwhile, the judging panel has chemistry and Simon has figured out at this point that they’re really not the stars of the show anyway — it’s really all about the acts. If America’s Got Talent has a great crop of acts it’s going to be an excellent season. If it doesn’t, it’s going to be forgettable. The series has done a good job the past few years of getting some really interesting acts, but the ones they’re probably going to continue to struggle with are the variety acts — magicians, jugglers, and circus performers. There are only so many people out there who are performing in some of these fields; it’s a little different than singers and dancers, where there is a pretty larger crop. It’s a little more accessible for the average American. Can you imagine a kid going to his parents saying that they want to juggle things on fire or balance on a high-wire? Probably won’t go that well for most of them.

We don’t see there being any end to America’s Got Talent anytime soon. The ratings are enormous and one of the smartest things that NBC has ever done over the years is made sure that it aired only in the summer save for a special here and there. It’s allowed the show to feel special and more like an event.
