TV Lifespans: Can Hawaii Five-0 last several more seasons?

TV Lifespans

Are you ready for some discussions on the long-term viability of some of your favorite shows? We’re back for the second year in a row with our ongoing TV Lifespans series. The point of these articles isn’t to look at the renewal / cancellation odds for many of your favorite shows. Instead, the goal here is to prognosticate the future for long-term series that really shouldn’t be going anywhere in the future.

Hawaii Five-0 is the perfect starting-off point for this series just because it remains a steady performer and has a unique ability to withstand almost any adversity that is thrown at it. Think about things in terms of everything this series has withstood to date — departing cast members, timeslot changes, and the typical erosion that can come with many shows on TV that last longer than four or five years. Yet, it remains incredibly constant in viewers, it effectively introduced Meaghan Rath and Beulah Koale, and there really shouldn’t be any reason for CBS to get rid of it in the near future.

When we spoke to executive producer Peter M. Lenkov earlier this year, he sounded more than hopeful that there would be another season. Season 9 isn’t in too much doubt, at least in our mind.

Beyond that? Well, there are certainly questions. We’re a little more confident that Alex O’Loughlin will be back next season after some initial fears, but long-term? Who knows. You also have to wonder that with some of the other core cast members. There aren’t exactly too many cast members still on the show who’ve been there from the beginning, and you want to do your best to keep some of them. Beyond that, the series also has to remain profitable, the ratings have to be solid, and the quality has to be there enough so that CBS is happy about it.

Unlike some other long-running shows on the air right now, we actually don’t see Hawaii Five-0 as one that is going to end because CBS won’t want it to continue. Instead, we see it more that will last until the cast and crew are ready to hang it up. Don’t be overly concerned right now; with a show like this, the real hope is that when it does wrap up, there is enough foresight that the writers and producers are able to craft a great ending. We foresee another season or two, at least before some of those conversations start to turn serious.
