Shadowhunters: Malec voted readers’ favorite ‘ship from Freeform series
Over the course of the past several days, we’ve seen fans from across the entire world vote in a poll to answer this very question — and just like we imagined, there were many different opinions. Yet, Malec still reigned supreme with a pretty huge chunk of the votes — more than 60%, to be precise. Magnus and Alec beat out a number of other popular pairings including Clary & Jace (Clace), Clary & Simon (Climon), and Simon & Izzy (Sizzy, who took second place).
Why are Malec so appealing as a ‘ship both to Shadowhunters fans and CarterMatt readers? There are a number of different reasons, but much of it starts with Harry Shum Jr. and Matthew Daddario really committing themselves to these roles. They allowed viewers to fall for them in the same way that the characters have fallen for each other.

Beyond just this, we think that the evolution of the characters and their love story has been compelling to watch — you’ve seen them make it through some significant roadblocks. They’re on the other side of them now and still going strong, and that speaks a lot to their individual strength. Just from the onset these two characters had significant obstacles, given that they come from such different walks of life and that could have easily held them back.
We also think their popularity also still stems from them being a great example to all viewers, whether they be in the LGBTQ community or not, of a strong, supportive couple who viewers should look up to. They have problems, but they make it through those problems and have a deep love for each other. They’ve got a chance to be one of the most stable couples entering season 3; we’re excited to see that play out.
Shadowhunters season 3 premieres on Freeform this March.
