Should John Constantine get solo show after Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow gig?
It’s pretty darn clear at this point that the character, played fantastically by Matt Ryan, is well-regarded by most comic-book fans and viewers. There was a big movement to get the canceled NBC series starring Ryan a new home; when that didn’t happen, we eventually had a chance to see the character navigate over to Arrow for an appearance. While that was thought off as a one-off at the time, it’s certainly evolved since into something more. The NBC show is now available on CW Seed, there is that animated series coming later this year, and there’s also going to be the gig on Legends of Tomorrow next month.
If you haven’t seen some of the first details regarding Constantine’s debut on that show — a reunion-of-sorts with Sara Lance, who he helped to bring back to her former self — you can take a look below:
FOLLOW YOUR HEART – After Sara’s (Caity Lotz) encounter with Mallus, the Legends are paid a visit by John Constantine (guest star Matt Ryan), a demonologist detective. The Legends agree to accompany him to a present-day psychiatric hospital and they are surprised to discover who Constantine is trying to help. During the exorcism, Sara, Leo (guest star Wentworth Miller) and Constantine go missing, leaving Ray (Brandon Routh) and Zari (Tala Ashe) to try to take care of Constantine’s client. Meanwhile, Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Nate (Nick Zano) once again come face to face with Kuasa. Dominc Purcell also stars. Dermott Downs directed the episode written by Keto Shimizu & Matthew Maala (#310).
Is The CW auditioning John for his own show with some of these appearances? We hesitate to say that, mostly because we don’t quite know if there’s room for another superhero show. Personally, we’d like to see them order a series or two for summer and a Constantine show coupled with one about the Blue Beetle or Green Lantern would be something that we would embrace. Yet, we think what they are doing more of here is setting the table and offering Constantine as many invitations as possible.

One of the creative challenges is finding the right venue for the character. John is a master of the occult, and that’s not something some of these shows dabble in all that much. Legends of Tomorrow is in that space right now with Mallus, but it’s not like they’ve been in this place for the entire series. It’s like Arrow being there temporarily in season 4. The Flash hasn’t really gone in this direction yet and the mechanics of bringing Constantine to Supergirl are difficult.
Clearly, The CW is keeping their options open in regards to Constantine’s future — we’d love to see more of him, but this really could just be a situation where he turns up at the right place at the right time.
