Keep or Cancel: Should The Librarians season 5 happen at TNT?
Let’s start with what we know within our heart of hearts: The Librarians is the sort of show that really should last forever, just because it’s so much fun and completely different from any other series on TV. Unfortunately, it also airs in a tough timeslot, it aired over the course of the holidays this year, and we’re not sure that 90% of the greater television audience even knows it exists. Outside of TNT this is not exactly a show that gets a heck of a lot of promotion.
When you consider many of these factors we do actually think that the show’s ratings are pretty decent. It is averaging a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is better than some other recent TNT programming, and given the lack of aforementioned promotion what more could you expect? We do recognize that the ratings are now year to year but what this network should realize is that The Librarians is somewhat of a self-starter. It does very well for itself without really needing a whole lot of attention; just imagine what it could do airing after another successful show.
Ratings-wise and creatively, we’re not as worried about the future of The Librarians. What we are a little more worried about is the purging of the network’s programming that has happened since Kevin Reilly took over. Take a look at Rizzoli & Isles and Major Crimes, two long-running shows that weren’t developed by him and could have kept going much longer than they did. Or, take a look at another show in The Last Ship that is likely ending after the upcoming fifth season. We understand the desire to give TNT a new identity appealing to a new demographic, but why take away shows that many viewers love? This is why we’re worried, and it doesn’t have a whole lot to do with anything other than network ideology.
Hopefully, one way or another we’ll hear more on the future of The Librarians in the coming weeks. There are only a couple of episodes left this season.
