The Fosters cancellation, spin-off created whirlwind of emotion for Maia Mitchell

When the news came out about The Fosters cancellation, it arrived in a rather strange way — while it appears as though this series is ending, there is something else beginning in the form of a new spin-off. This show will star Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez as older versions of their characters of Callie and Mariana as the two try their best to come to grips with what is a very new life for each one of them in Los Angeles. They’ll be in a much better position in their lives where they can enact more change, which we know has been important to them ever since the early days of the series.

As you would imagine, the news of both the original show ending and a new show beginning can create a whirlwind of emotions. This is something Mitchell confirmed to TVLine in sharing her reaction to when the news first came out:

“We found out [about the cancellation and spin-off] a couple minutes before the [press] release came out, and it was surprisingly emotional and sad, and then exciting and also devastating.”

Mitchell also confirmed more that some familiar faces from the original show will be stopping by:

“We found out the show was ending, and they were like, “Do you want to keep the story alive?” We were like, “Yeah, in whatever way we can. Let’s figure it out.” They came up with a way for us to do that. There are going to be appearances from all your Fosters favorites, so it’s not just going to be our show. There are going to be new series regulars and new characters, and still the same amount of representation as we’ve had on The Fosters, and the same topics. It’s [the] same but different.”

We won’t lie in saying that we enter any new project with a certain degree of trepidation just because of the fact that the original version of The Fosters did so many things that were great. Yet, sometimes things must change — they have to. In a lot of ways Callie and Mariana on The Fosters itself are realizing that. This could be a chance for the characters to do and experience things that they would not be able to if they were still at Anchor Beach.
