Benedict Cumberbatch clearly not having Sherlock season 5 questions

Sherlock season 4

If a Sherlock season 5 does end up happening, it does not appear as though Benedict Cumberbatch is looking to discuss it any any point in the near future.

Cumberbatch recently took part in a TCA Winter Press tour event promoting his new Masterpiece project The Child in Time, and made it abundantly clear (albeit in a rather joking way) that he’s not really talking about Sherlock for the time being. Benedict was present via live-stream for a Q&A session with reporters, and when supposedly asked about the BBC show’s future he quipped “goodbye” before darting out of camera view. It’s a funny visual, but it is also probably one of the only ways he can actually answer this question at the moment while not saying the same things that he’s said a million times before.

The biggest thing to note about Sherlock season 5 is this: It’s ages down the road. It’s not happening this year, and we’d be shocked if it happens in 2019. Maybe we’ll get it in 2020 if we’re lucky, but at the moment nobody has even committed to doing another season. The basic answer we get from most people at this point is that there’s an interest in revisiting the story but there’s no hurry. Cumberbatch wants to take on other projects, and we know that the same can be said for Martin Freeman and even writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. The time will probably come, but that time isn’t at any point in the reasonably-near future.

Whenever Sherlock season 3 does happen to premiere, we’re of course looking forward to having a little bit more news to share on the subject. We know that there is absolutely still plenty of source material out there, but knowing Moffat and Gatiss they could end up being very keen to create some more of their own.
