Law & Order: SVU season 19: ‘The Undiscovered Country’ & the Star Trek connection

Law & Order: SVU season 19 episode 13 is poised to be the last new episode of the series before the Olympics take the show off the air for a number of weeks. With that, you have to imagine that the NBC series is probably going to be going out with something big!

Unfortunately, for the time being NBC is keeping their cards close to the vest on the February 7 episode save for sharing the title “The Undiscovered Country.” Insofar as SVU episode titles go, this is a strange one. This is not a show that often uses episode titles with more than just two words, and this is also not a show that really ever makes Star Trek references. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is really the only obvious reference point for this episode, and it’s not altogether easy to determine what the connection is between that film and this show.

If you really want to theorize, though, we’re certainly down for that. Per IMDb, take a look at the synopsis for the movie below:

On the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace.

If you want to draw some sort of parallel here, you could say that maybe this is an episode where the SVU is roped into some sort of conspiracy, or that two members of the squad find themselves wrongfully accused of trying to go after someone else either in the NYPD or the government — we don’t necessarily mean in an assassination sort of way, since the title does not have to be taken some literally. You could argue that the show is setting up a power-struggle storyline at the moment, given that there was some serious tension between Dodds and Fin over the memo at the end of this past episode.

No matter what happens, you better believe that “The Undiscovered Country” is going to be an intense SVU episode. After all, the Michael Chernuchin era of the series is already proving to be one with big twists and fantastic cliffhangers.
