Keep or Cancel: Will Shemar Moore’s SWAT get a season 2 on CBS?

SWAT season 2

Is a SWAT season 2 coming for Shemar Moore and the rest of the cast soon? Based on where the CBS series is at the moment, we certainly do think that there is a great case to be made for it! This is a thoroughly engaging, action-packed show that seems to be on its way to helping CBS do something that they’ve been trying to do for a long time: Cultivate a winner Thursday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time.

While we do think that there will be some ratings debate over the next few weeks with the show, right now there’s a lot of reason to be confident about a SWAT season 2 renewal. Here’s a small taste of it.

Looking at the SWAT season 1 ratings

To date, SWAT is averaging around a 1.0 rating in live+same-day ratings, which is enough to make it a solid contributor for CBS on Thursday night. This is without even bringing in DVR figures, streams online, or anything else. It’s the most-watched show in its timeslot at the moment and, perhaps most important, viewers who watched from the beginning have stuck around.

What you want to see with a new series more than anything else is stability. It’s better to have a show premiere with a 1.1 rating and stay close to that all season than one premiere with a 1.5 rating and drop down to a 0.6 or 0.7 six or seven episodes later. You want to know that your viewership is loyal, that way if the show gets renewed, it’s able to keep most of the viewership that you had the first time around.

Also remember this

There’s still a chance that SWAT will pick up viewers during the off-season. Like many other CBS series, SWAT has the ability to pick up more viewers by airing repeats over the summer. You don’t have to watch the premiere and every other episode in order to understand what’s going on; you can pop in a few episodes into the story and still understand/enjoy what’s happening.

One more thing: Remember that CBS has extended the season 1 episode order for SWAT multiple times over the course of the year. They are clearly happy with its performance and are banking on its long-term future. We expect a renewal later this spring, but still keep fighting for it if you can.
