Verscase family blasts new American Crime Story season as ‘fiction’

In what is news that really should not come as much of a surprise to anyone at the moment, there are some critics out there of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. They just so happen to be from within Versace’s own family.

In a new statement released to media outlets on Monday, the Versace family made it clear that they did not authorize the latest chapter of the Ryan Murphy limited series, which is based in part on the book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianna Versace and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. They also did not authorize that.

Take a look at the full statement below:

“The Versace family has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming TV series about the death of Mr. Gianni Versace … Since Versace did not authorize the book on which it is partly based nor has it taken part in the writing of the screenplay, this TV series should only be considered as a work of fiction.”

Part of the danger that comes along with telling stories inspired at least by true events is that you run the risk of angering people who don’t exactly what to relive that particular part of their lives. There appeared to be a time in which Christopher Darden was not altogether eager to talk about the OJ Simpson trial during The People v. OJ Simpson; meanwhile, 101-year old actress Olivia de Havilland filed suit over the depiction of her on FEUD: Bette & Joan. We imagine that there could be much more in the way of drama coming given that FEUD season 2 is going to be set at Buckingham Palace.

Given that The Assassination of Gianni Versace has yet to even arrive on the air, we have a hard time thinking that things are going to be getting any easier for the series in the near future. The family could raise even more objections to the ways in which certainly events are portrayed, and we certainly wouldn’t blame them since they didn’t ask for these stories to make it onto the air.
