How is Dan alive on Roseanne? New promo mocks John Goodman’s return

Johnny Galecki returning

How is Dan alive on Roseanne? Well, the show’s March return is likely going to answer that question in part. For now, though, the latest promo via ABC seems to be taking great pleasure out of the fact that John Goodman’s character is suddenly back from the dead.

This promo aired during the NBA broadcast on ABC Christmas Day, and it features a really funny in-joke regarding Dan suddenly being alive even though he was killed off at the end of the original series. Here’s the thing about some of these revivals, though — they don’t seem to have any problem at all changing history here and there to suit some of their self-interests. We don’t see it so much as the shows trying to trample their original legacy — they jkust want to find some ways to keep entertaining and, in this case, doing a Roseanne revival without Goodman would be rather sad. Dan is one of the best characters from the original series and it’s already going to be somewhat of a bummer that the appearance of one Johnny Galecki is going to be fairly limited thanks to his work over on The Big Bang Theory.

We imagine that the Roseanne revival itself will probably have an in-joke or two when it comes to Dan being back from the dead — they’ll construct their explanation in a way that makes sense, but also have a little bit of fun. This is a show that may throw a few in-jokes in there while it chugs along with some of its original snark. This was, in its heyday, one of the most timely and iconic sitcoms out there. The question we have entering the new iteration is how in the world the producers are going to be able to keep some of the content and the tone the same when television in general has gotten so much edgier. It is significantly more challenging to be on the cutting edge these days when there are so many other premium cable or streaming options.
