If you look below via TVLine, you can see one of the first photos from this January 2 episode entitled “High Tide,” one that will feature Wilmer Valderrama and Emily Wickersham’s characters going undercover as a criminal couple who can be hired out for various operations. Obviously, this isn’t the first time that you’ve seen a story like this on NCIS or really any other show, for that matter. It’s pretty common to have a storyline like this for a few different reasons.
1. A chance to mix things up – Anytime you’re on a long-running show like this we have to imagine that it’s fun to step outside of your character, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This is the sort of story that actors love since they allow them to play a different character — there are still echoes of their original role in there, but it is a pretty significant departure. There aren’t many opportunities to do something like this over the course of the series. You have to take advantage of them!
2. Separating characters from the group – For Bishop and Torres, one of the things that is the most exciting about this is that it marks an opportunity to test their mettle away from the rest of the team. Putting characters on their own forces them to be resourceful and think somewhat outside of the box.
3. Of course, the romance buzz – Will this become something more? Obviously, these sorts of pairings are designed to create those sort of conversations and we can’t exactly say we’re surprised that the producers would want to go in this direction here. They obviously want people to have conversations surrounding the show — we’re not sure if Torres and Bishop should really go here, but NCIS as a franchise has brought us some memorable pairings across the board, whether it be Deeks / Kensi, Tony / Ziva, or Percy / Lasalle. Bishop and Torres would have a long ways to go in order to match up with any of these people.
