Last Tango in Halifax season 5: Don’t expect more after holiday special
In speaking a little bit more on this subject to the Radio Times, actor Sir David Jacobi confirmed this with the following message discussing the special (which first aired in Britain last year). The reasoning apparently for this has to deal with writer Sally Wainwright being focused on other projects for the time being:
“We did a Christmas special last Christmas, which we thought was the beginning of another series, but no … She’s written out, she’s writing so many things … She’s a wonderful writer, but she’s got so much work that Tango is finished. It’s very sad, we all loved it.”
As sad as this news may be to hear, we cannot exactly say that we’re shocked about it. British television series by and large don’t tend to have a super-long shelf life, especially ones with comedic elements. Fawlty Towers remains a great example of a series that had a nice little run and left well before its time. It’s probably better to have a small handful of great episodes that one that goes on long past its time.
Let’s just hope that many of the Last Tango in Halifax cast members get some opportunities to do great things in the future. The last thing that we want to see is for this to be the last time we get to see some of these people on either British or American television.
For now, the one thing we’ll say is that if you’re watching the special live tonight, be sure to enjoy it! After all, there may not be any more opportunities.

Extremely bummed! Even after yet another viewing of last years LTiH Christmas special, still utterly marvellous and completely different than anything else on tv! LOVE this wonderful series and I just hold onto the hope provided by bbc’s statement in response to Sir Derek’s comments and rumours of an untimely end:
that LTiH is definitely NOT cancelled. It’s only that Sally Wainwright is (still,
sigh) extremely busy with writing other projects at the moment.
So, here’s hoping!! It’s an agonising wait, but personally I cannot get enough of these beautiful characters. PLEASE Sally – don’t abandon the glorious Last Tango In Halifax world you created!!
