Chandler Riggs’ father lashes out over son’s exit from The Walking Dead

Chandler Riggs' father

It feels as though you can add Chandler Riggs’ father to the list of people upset over what happened to Carl on The Walking DeadYet, he is upset for different reasons than most of us.

While interacting with his son’s fans via Facebook, William Riggs made it very clear that he didn’t agree with what Showrunner Scott M. Gimple and AMC did with his son, but also the timing of the move:

“Watching Gimple fire my son 2 weeks before his 18th birthday after telling him they wanted him for the next 3 years was disappointing … I never trusted Gimple or AMC but Chandler did. I know how much it hurt him. But we do absolutely know how lucky we have been to be a part of it all and appreciate all the love from fans all these years!”

While we know there are some out there lashing out at Williams Riggs for lashing out about his son, we get the sentiment. He cares about his son and is clearly upset that the situation was apparently handled the way it was. We know from Chandler himself that he was blindsided by the decision to write the Carl character off, but that doesn’t mean that there was any malice or ill intent here. This could have just been a situation as simple as Gimple making this decision based on where The Walking Dead was in its story. Often shows and stories do change things up based on the evolution of things over time and that could very well be the case here.

Riggs’ father later deleted the post, and while this all may be sad for Chandler we feel like he’ll be just fine in the end. He has an opportunity now to do a few different things and try new avenues for himself. He’ll also always have conventions that he can visit in the event that he wants to stay connected with many of his fans. It’s a bummer to see him go, and we know that many fans out there feel the same way as we do here at CarterMatt. Carl has been a beacon of hope the past few seasons and has focused on a future in this world that can be stable and growing rather than just focusing on the here and now with his guns blazing.

If you missed it…

We recently nominated the character of Carl in the CarterMatt Awards during the category of Best Hero. If you want to vote for him, you can do so over at the link here.
