Outlander season 3 in 360: See a new Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan scene

Outlander season 3 in 360

Before today, who knew that seeing Outlander season 3 in 360 could really be a thing? Yet, here we are!

The video below, (from a behind-the-scenes perspective alone) has to be one of the coolest things that the Starz series and studio Sony have done. While many of you have probably had a chance to see 360-degree videos before, very rarely have we see one done of an actual scene. You get to see Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe introduce said scene from on board the Artemis, and then for the scene itself you’re shifted off-ship while the scene plays out. Nonetheless, you can still see the crew members in action working to make said scene as awesome as possible.

The best part about this video is that you can watch it two or three different times and see entirely different things. It also gives you more of a sense of the challenge that Heughan, Balfe, Cesar Domboy, Lauren Lyle, and the remainder of the cast all faced while filming the show in South Africa. It’s hard enough throwing yourselves decades into the past in order to play a character; it’s even more challenging having to pretend to be on a ship at sea when in reality you’re just in front of a massive green screen with crew members all around you in street clothes. You’ve also got to deal with the heat of being in South Africa, which was often challenging during production.

From a technical perspective alone this is awesome, and from a story perspective it’s also nice to get a little more of the morning after the turtle soup scene at the end of this past Sunday’s 3×11. This gives you a sense of the impending arrival to Jamaica, which is where the majority of the action for the upcoming “The Bakra” is going to take place. Expect this episode to be the one to accelerate many different storylines, with the main ones being the search for Young Ian and also Jamie and Claire attempting to ensure that they leave Jamaica still together.

Hopefully, these 360 videos are something that Outlander (and some other shows) continue to showcase in the future — it’s a fun way to get fans involved, and show you everything that goes into making a show as highly technical and ambitious as this one is. We also just like the patience on the network’s part in releasing this — they filmed this scene months ago and held off on it specifically for the purpose of showing it now.
