Chicago Med season 3 on set: Norma Kuhling opens up about Dr. Ava Bekker
For Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), one of the main storylines coming up is going to be a new rivalry between him and colleague Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling), who first appeared at the end of season 2. To call the relationship that these two have competitive would be an understatement and Bekker isn’t going away anytime soon. Kuhling is a major part of season 3 and as the story progresses, you should get a chance to learn more about her character in turn.
So what did Kuhling know about this role at the time of getting the job? This is something that she was happy to explain to CarterMatt while we were at One Chicago Day this past month:
“We knew that she was going to be South African, so I had to start working on the accent. She’s a tough cookie, but ultimately she does care more than she lets on. She will be there for you in a minute if you need her, but in the meantime she won’t mince her words and she’ll rile you up for up for fun. There’s [another side] to her and they told me that they would bring that out more and more as we go on. I’ve gone into it knowing that while she’s rather hard to like, you want to keep bringing forward more human qualities. I know that’s a part of her as well.”
Basically, what you should know about Dr. Bekker is this — while you may not be altogether inclined to root for her at first that could change over time. You’ll understand more of where she’s coming from, and hopefully also come to appreciate the back and forth relationship that she and Dr. Rhodes have. Hopefully this will make the two become better doctors rather than serving as a source of more stress. Sometimes, getting too heated and frustrated by a situation can cause you to lose your focus during surgery. That may be something that both parties have to watch out for.
