Were Supergirl season 3 ratings hurt by Sanvers breakup, recent headlines?
When it comes to the latter, our philosophy at CarterMatt was this: If you love the show, don’t penalize the many for the actions of just one man. It’s best to have perspective and remember that there are other jobs at stake and people who care a lot about this show and making it as great as possible for everyone watching at home.
Thankfully, the latest ratings (courtesy of The CW) do show that despite all of the headlines, there really was not much of a ratings change at all. “Midvale” ended up generating a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is roughly even with what it posted the week before with “Damage.” Meanwhile, the show’s viewership of 1.86 million is down less than 1% week-to-week, and that is such a small deviation that it could be changed by the time the final ratings come in later in the day.
What these Supergirl season 3 ratings signify is that the show is so much bigger than any one producer, and that these are fans who are committed to it. We’re still very much bummed about the end of Sanvers, but with Floriana Lima leaving the show (at least as a major player for now) we understand the need to push the story forward and allow for some new plot-lines and big reveals.
The next two weeks are going to be essential to Supergirl both in terms of its present and future success. Next week marks the return of Chris Wood as Mon-El and it’s going to be very interesting to see what happens with the ratings then. Mon-El has to be one of the most-polarizing characters in all of the Arrow-verse, with most viewers either choosing to love him or hate him. The week after that is the Crisis on Earth-X crossover and one of the reasons why that matters is because it should offer up a chance for Supergirl to bring some more viewers over to its show. These crossovers do have a tendency to draw some of the biggest ratings of the season, even though to date we don’t think that any of them have been good enough in order to inspire someone to watch any one of the other shows in the event that they were not previously.

You forgot to mention how upset many fans were with the cast’s behavior at Comic Con. It was unfair and wrong to call them homophobic, but they did mock a certain segment of their fans for shipping a non-canon pairing. FYI, those fans knew their ship wouldn’t happen, there was no need for cast to be rude and dismissive.
And season 2 was the Mon-El show basically, which turned many off.
