The Flash season 4 spoilers: Will we meet Sue Dearbon?

Sue Diby

Have you enjoyed Ralph Dibny on The Flash? Personally, we’ve found him a hoot even though he is very different from the character in the comics. He is a little bit wilder, a little more arrogant, and he seems to enjoy swindling people working as a terrible private eye far more than he should. Also, he’s really gotta stop frequenting strip clubs to the point of getting his picture on the wall as a top customer.

For comic book fans, there may be one question top of mind with Ralph: Where is Sue Dearbon? For those unfamiliar with the Elongated Man comics, Sue is someone who becomes a love interest for Ralph and eventually his wife. (Think of her as his own version of Iris West.) Given that the Flash writers have changed so many other things about this character, is it possible that they would remove Sue from the equation? It makes sense to wonder about it, but remember that this is a show with many romantic undertones. Go back to Iris West again as an example: While the path for her and Barry Allen may have been different on the show, the endgame still appears to be the same.

Ultimately, it does feel as though The Flash may bring Sue into the mix in due time. It’s just not going to happen this season. Speaking on that subject to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had the following to say:

“We want to wait to get to know Ralph and exhaust Ralph where he is before he meets Sue … Ralph and Sue are endgame, as the kids like to say, so you don’t want to bring her in too soon. But that’s definitely in our plan. Not for this year, but we’ll see.”

This statement alone should suggest that producers have a plan for Ralph that exists well beyond season 4. That is corroborated further by the following — when casting notices for the character first surfaced, there was talk about him becoming a major part of season 5. It wasn’t a guarantee, but the option was there if Dibny resonated with fans. Given that this is a character with such a rich DC backstory, introducing him this year is a little different than the introduction of Tom Felton as Julian Albert last year. It was easier to write out Julian since there was less in the source material to look forward to. With Ralph there’s a wide array of material and Sue Dearbon is just the starting point. It will be harder to let Dibny go if the character pops the rest of the season.

New episodes of The Flash air Tuesday nights on the CW. Here’s to hoping that the trajectory for Ralph remains a positive one.
