This Is Us season 2: Is Alexandra Breckenridge leaving?
At the end of Tuesday night’s new episode, we were certainly put into a position where we were left wondering that very thing: Kevin and Sophie broke up, mostly because of Kevin refusing to acknowledge that he had the capacity to be a good partner for her. He’s not himself — he’s battling addiction, demons, pressure, and many more things.
Sophie doesn’t really have obligation to be there for him — she has been more than patient with him already and this is not her first rodeo in this relationship. Who knows if she is going to find a way accept him again if he finds a way back to her door?
Before we dive into anything else though, one of the biggest things that we should note here is that Breckenridge is a series regular; therefore, there is no reason to think that this will be the end of the story. It could just be a break.
In terms of the actress’ real life, the timing could be right for her to take some time away. She is currently expecting her second child and could be on maternity leave for the near future.
Obviously, there is one way in which This Is Us could use Sophie down the road: Flashbacks. She has so much more of a preexisting relationship with Kevin than we’ve even seen on the show, and the writers could always dive back into that. Or, maybe she is a saint and when she discovers everything that Kevin really is going through she will reach out and find a way to be there for him. Or, maybe he gets better and finds a way to get back to her. Time will tell.
One way or another, there’s little reason to believe that Sophie is gone from the show forever — either in the present or the past. This Is Us characters have a bit of magic in how they can always reappear thanks to the non-linear nature of the storytelling.
