Golden Globes 2018: Why Chyler Leigh, Chrissy Metz, Sophie Skelton, Shailene Woodley, Caterina Scorsone deserve Supporting Actress nominations
On October 31, all official submissions were made to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and on November 24 ballots will begin going out for official nomination voting. The focus of this CarterMatt series is to help identify great shows and performers for the HFPA to consider. We’ll be sharing some of our personal picks in every TV-related category daily throughout the month of November at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time (4:00 p.m. Eastern), and from there, we’ll leave the voting for you to share some of your own favorites!
Voting Rules – Note that this is just for fun and for campaign purposes; you aren’t voting for the actual Golden Globes! Vote however often you want from now until November 30 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time, when the polls close and will no longer be available. We will announce all of the poll winners at 1:00 p.m. Pacific on November 30, during the heart of campaign season, as a way to help get the word out on some shows and performers worthy of a nomination.
With all of that laid out, let’s get to the first order of business today: Discussing the CarterMatt picks for Supporting Actress. Remember, that for some silly reason the Globes choose to lump together performers from Limited Series, Comedies, and Dramas into a single category.
Chyler Leigh, Supergirl (The CW) – After watching her arc on the show in season 3, it’s pretty clear that she had some of the best work of her career. Relationships can often be hard to play out on television since every one of them is different, but between Chyler’s Alex and Maggie (Floriana Lima) you saw everything from joy to frustration to eventual heartbreak. Leigh’s amazing performance is only going to continue to grow from the time of this writing as her character is still going through the stages of grief of losing this relationship. She plays Alex as tough, but also relatable as she’s someone still trying to figure out her place in life.
Chrissy Metz, This Is Us (NBC) – Chrissy is phenomenal, and she could almost submit as a lead on this show if she really wanted to. Yet, here she should be almost a guaranteed lock as a nomination for bringing so much passion, lightness, and also struggle to the character of Kate. She’s one of the most real characters on television and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting a chance to see her story told. Every supporting player is someone who should be able to carry a show in their own right and with Metz, she makes it easy to be engaged on Kate’s story and take part in her journey.
Caterina Scorsone, Grey’s Anatomy (ABC) – Few people have a chance to give a wonderful performance as the same character on two different drama series and deliver in the way that Scorsone did this year. The reigning CarterMatt Awards champion for underrated performer of the year continued to show why delivering powerful and at times painful moments gave us many different dimensions to this Amelia character. The brain tumor reveal was heartbreaking, but what remains interesting about the aftermath of it is that Scorsone has this rare opportunity to reset her character and play someone with many new dimensions.
Sophie Skelton, Outlander (Starz) – Like with Tobias Menzies, Skelton is someone who managed to show us a tremendous performance with just a handful of episodes. Arguably her strongest performance came close to the end of her role on the season (at least so far), as Brianna and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) engaged in a conversation about her returning to the stones to find Jamie (Sam Heughan). Skelton balanced perfectly the difficulty of Brianna’s situation — she had just come to know her mother as her true self, and now had to cope with the reality of her going away. She showed sacrifice and maturity and this performance made us tremendously excited to see what will lie ahead for her next.
Shailene Woodley, Big Little Lies (HBO) – Sometimes when you have a show with so many super-accomplished actors you can run into situations where it’s hard to differentiate one great performance from the next. Jane Chapman was a great role with a ton of depth to her, and working alongside Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, allowed Shailene (and the entire cast) to reach a new level of greatness. Big Little Lies was certainly a painful story at times, but this was the best performance of Woodley’s career to date and a role that was both relatable and memorable even within the ensemble.
