Grey’s Anatomy will reference Katherine Heigl’s Izzie in 300th episode

Katherine Heigl

CarterMatt wants to give Grey’s Anatomy a little bit of credit here — for the 300th episode, they will remind viewers that Katherine Heigl’s Izzie exists.

Ever since Heigl’s exit this character has been somewhat of a persona non grata with the series, and we’ve never gotten the sense that we would end up ever seeing her on the show again. Heigl said previously that she was open to it, but that’s really as far as the talks have gone. We’ve always said that we’re open to it as well, mostly because even though Heigl did not leave Grey’s Anatomy in a way that people were happy with, so much time has passed that maybe it’s time to let bygones be bygones and bring her back for a small arc.

Unfortunately, Heigl is not appearing in the flesh in the 300th episode, but you will get a chance to see some echoes of her character, Cristina, and George (the three original interns no longer on the show) in some patients who are treated. This is something that Sarah Drew (April) discusses more to Entertainment Weekly:

“Cristina, George, and Izzie we’re thinking about a lot during this episode because our three guest actors on the show actually really look like them and remind the rest of the doctors of those characters … That causes the original group to really remember those people well and want to fight for these ones to live.”

What the writers seem to be doing for this 300th episode is finding ways for the doctors at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to be reflective without just relying on clip-show tropes or breaking the budget getting so many former stars to show up. We would say this though — if there is a time to break the budget, wouldn’t this be it? We’d love to see Sandra Oh back on the show, but it almost feels like if she was going to come back we would have seen her in some of the big episodes already since her departure. Our hope with her at this point is that there could be a way to get her back for a cameo in a series finale, depending of course on when that is.

The 300th episode is coming at a time of some transition for the show, interestingly enough — Martin Henderson (Nathan Riggs) recently departed the series and we’re waiting to meet whoever is going to be the latest Meredith Grey love interest. Meanwhile, Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) recently divorced and it remains to be seen where their own personal lives are going to go.

Do you think that Grey’s Anatomy is doing the right thing with the 300th episode?
