Chicago Fire season 6 on set: EP Derek Haas teases Casey, Severide, and Otis stories

What will the story be like on Chicago Fire season 6 when the show returns? This was a big subject while CarterMatt was at One Chicago Day just this past week! The NBC series ended with a big cliffhanger regarding Ramon, but there were also some other interesting story-lines set up.

One of these story-lines was about mounting tension between Casey and Severide following the former’s position to Captain, and it does appear as though some of that will continue … albeit in a slightly different form than you would expect. Here is what executive producer Derek Haas had to say to CarterMatt on the subject of Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney’s characters:

“It’s going to be a dynamic we play with throughout the year. We had six episodes in the fall and we have five more before the Olympics, and that’s great for us as writers. We get to break it into manageable chunks rather than doing a 22-episode order.

“Over the next five episodes we’re going to do a story where Dawson has affection for a victim …  The problem is going to be that Severide was there when Dawson rescued this teenage girl and Severide will take Dawson’s side. Casey will be kind of pushed to the side because we know how he felt [at first] about Louie.

“That’s where that story goes — it’s less about Captain vs. Lieutenant and more of a personal situation in terms of ‘hey, maybe you shouldn’t be giving my wife advice on this.'”

Haas also discussed one of the other big storylines of the fall finale in the potential creation of the bar Molly’s North; it appears that moving forward, and this is going to be a chance for Otis to get a little bit of time in the limelight:

“We had done a Molly’s food truck that ended in a disaster and things with Herrmann tend to end in disaster. But we hadn’t done an Otis story this year and we just thought about having this bar going out of business close to where Otis lives. He sees that there’s a cute woman working there and it turns out her dad owns the bar.

“Love at Otis was the impetus for starting that story. I’ll give you a tidbit that is meaningless to anyone but me. Molly is my mother’s name, and the name of this bar was Mac’s and that is my stepdad’s name. They’re teetotalers from Texas and they don’t even drink, so the fact that there are two bars that are now named after them is funny.”
