Is an Alias Grace season 2 renewal possible at Netflix?
Based on where we are at the moment, the easy answer to that is “well, it seems unlikely.” This show was constructed as a miniseries, one based on the Margaret Atwood source material and with a defined beginning, middle, and end. We are in an era at the moment where limited series are more popular than they’ve been in some time, and that makes sense given that this format is often a way to convince big-name actors to come to television.
The irony that comes with this is that after many big-name actors do eventually sign up for some of these shows, they realize soon afterwards that they really like being a part of the medium. This is why you’ve got a show like Big Little Lies that could be coming back for more despite being originally envisioned as just a limited series and nothing more. Meanwhile, you’ve also got shows like 13 Reasons Why and The Handmaid’s Tale (another Margaret Atwood adaptation) coming back for more despite finishing up their original source material. We didn’t anticipate that either one of them would have a chance to come back, and yet, here we are. All of these shows are following a pattern laid out by The Leftovers, which told a complete story in its first season based on the Tom Perrotta novel before continuing with some of its own material. That was the show that created the mold other one-time limited series now seem to be following.
What CarterMatt is trying to say is this: While it may be the intention for Alias Grace to just be a miniseries, give it some time. If the end product is successful enough we wouldn’t be surprised if either the producers or Netflix find a way to extend the show in some shape or form. Given the cast that is assembled here and some of the intricate work with the costumes and the set design, it’s hard to be upset over the notion of getting more.
