Ratings: NCIS, Bull, The Flash, This Is Us season 2 hurt due to World Series, Halloween
Why in the known world would you think it was a good idea to program many of your top shows against the World Series? Baseball isn’t always a ratings powerhouse, but it is when you are up against one of the greatest World Series battles of all time. The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers have played one great game after another and it’s all leading to Game 7 tonight — the second straight Game 7 that we’ve seen for the World Series.
It’s fair to say that every show on the air was hurt pretty badly last night, but some felt the damage a little bit more than others. You also have to remember that with this being Halloween there were even fewer viewers around as a result of that.
NCIS – With a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the show posted one of its lowest ratings ever. Airing at the 8:00 p.m. hour is even more harmful given that many families are still out trick-or-treating at around this time.
This Is Us – In terms of losing the most total viewers in the demo, no show was hurt worse than the NBC hit. It fell all the way down to a 2.0 rating — still a great rating for a TV show in 2017, but not a great number for This Is Us.
The Flash – With a 0.7 rating the series posted its own worst rating ever, and it lost nearly 30% of its demo audience. This was the harshest percentage decline out of any show out there.
Law & Order: True Crime – With just a 0.8 rating we cannot stress enough how much of a mistake it was that NBC decided to air this after This Is Us. At least Chicago Med is going to be premiering later this month, right? It’s got a chance to capitalize and perform a little bit better than this. CarterMatt can tell you from being at the Chicago Med set this week that the cast is very enthusiastic about getting to air in a timeslot where they can get better ratings.
All in all, this is not a ratings night many will remember — as a matter of fact, it’s one that the networks really need to look at in the future if they want to avoid this next time around. Given that this is a long TV season we simply don’t understand why networks work around the World Series and save themselves some trouble. There is always a chance that they don’t get some of these viewers back.
