House of Cards season 6 to be its last; decision made before Kevin Spacey news
Today, the streaming service confirmed that the upcoming sixth season of the show would be its last. Production began earlier this month on the show, but this news was apparently decided before the comments from Anthony Rapp regarding series star Kevin Spacey and an incident that allegedly took place many years ago. New episodes of House of Cards are going to start streaming next year provided that this current information holds true. This is an ongoing situation when it comes to determining the show’s future, so don’t depend on this being the last we hear of it.
In a statement today via TVLine, both Netflix and Media Rights Capital (who produce the show) offered up the following:
“[We] are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”
Spacey recently released a statement of his own offering an apology to Rapp while also addressing his sexuality for one of the first times publicly:
“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
In turn, these remarks have been met with harsh comments by many within the gay community, including GLAAD, who blasted Spacey for using a coming-out story to try and draw attention away from the scandal at hand.
The allegations against Spacey are horrifying and if House of Cards does end up getting its final season on the air we have a hard time imagining that it will be in any way the show that it once was. That’s not fair to the other cast members, but so much of the show is tied to its lead.
