Ray Donovan season 5 episode 12 video: Is this closure for Ray?
In the sneak peek CarterMatt has for you below, you can get a sense of what we’re talking about here, as Ray does his best to say farewell to his time in therapy. This is his last court-mandated appointment, and while there he receives some news that he does not appear to be all that excited about: This really shouldn’t be considered an ending for him at all. In many ways, it’s actually more of a beginning. The therapist wants him to receive more treatment for everything that he’s been through, and understand that PTSD is not something that he could put a Band-Aid on and say that he’s all better. He’ll be dealing with this for almost the entirety of his life in one form or another, so if therapy is working for him, why not continue?
Will Ray listen to this advice? We’re not all too sure about that, mostly judging from how Ray (at the end of the video) doesn’t even seem to be acknowledging that he needs to forgive himself — even though he clearly does. Admitting your feelings is one of the first major steps to recovery, but unfortunately for Ray we’re not quite sure that he is there just yet. Maybe in time he can be, but that’s really one of the only things that he can hope for.
Probably the best thing about this scene, (and in many ways one of the best things about Ray Donovan in general) is that there is no sitting around and pretending as though Ray is just this resident bad-ass who can do no wrong. Many of the qualities that make him good at his job also in turn make him a not-great person. He has to figure out some ways to reconcile this and find a little more balance in his life.
With his probation ending and with a move to New York City on the horizon for season 6, this could be a chance for Ray to start over. Maybe he embraces that, or may he lets it all come crashing down. We’ll have more of a sense of that in due time but these decisions will define not just his future, but also the future of the entire series. We do know that there are going to be some struggles for him in New York even if he lets everything with Abby go and some of his indiscretions as an LA fixer. Yet, there are still some steps forward that he can take.
