Hawaii Five-0 season 8 and the earliest season 9 renewal hopes
Due to CBS opting to air a Michael Jackson Halloween special Friday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, the network is moving things around in a way where there is no Five-0 coming up in the near future. Instead of getting a chance to see more of the series we’re going to have a new episode of MacGyver shifted back an hour to 9:00 p.m. Eastern. It’s a shame to be without Steve, Danny, Grover, and the rest of the gang tonight given that we know that there is a Halloween episode coming with them — it may just be one you have to wait until after Halloween in order to see.
While there may not be a new episode to discuss today, we do have some other good news to discuss right now: The state of the season 8 ratings so far; in turn, also the show’s chances of coming back for a season 9.
We never want to be one to speak too soon on something like this or potentially jinx anything; for the time being, though, we’re feeling rather optimistic about the show’s future. The ratings so far for season 8 are rather impressive, especially when you consider all of the cast turnover over the summer and the tendency for most shows these days to drop at least 15% in key measurements from one season to the next.
In total viewers – This is rather impressive. Hawaii Five-0 is averaging 8.6 million viewers an episode (live+same-day), which is a drop of less than 8% versus the season 7 average of around 9.25 million. Season 7 ratings were actually higher on average than season 6, a nice change that probably had to do in part with the presence of MacGyver as a suitable lead-in + quality stories.
In the demo – To date, season 8 is averaging a 1.0 rating, down a little less than 10% from the season 7 average. Once again, this is below our threshold of when we’d be starting to get a little bit concerned.
Are there things that are concerns still with the show if it does return, including the future of star Alex O’Loughlin? Absolutely, and these aren’t things meant to be glossed over or ignored in any measure. Yet, we do have a feeling that some of these issues will sort themselves out over time — that’s just the optimist in us. Time will tell, and we’re still early in the season. For the time being, though, there’s reason to be optimistic that we’ll get a chance to spend another season in Hawaii beyond this one.

Please Renee for season 9. Season 8 OK but would be batter they bring back Cath. If she doesn’t return in this season I will most likely stop watching. Alicia as a love interest…boring. Her acting always been boring on CSI too! In my opinion.

I have watched from the very 1st episode and love it but with Grace and Daniel gone and Alex saying season 8 might be his last. I really can’t see how they could renew it for a season 9. 8 seasons is a very good run for any show. I won’t be watching past this season.

When Steve ran through a forest on fire, saw a helicopter fly overhead, then in a miracle he appears alone in his own helicopter to toss out cables while still flying, then lifting a cabin full of friends over the burning tree tops to safety…we were almost done. The silliness with the dog the next episode had us conclude our Hawaii 5-0 habit. The writing has been suspect in the past, but it has now gone completely off the rails now. This was a show we had watched from the beginning..but no longer. There are better cartoons out there.
