Doctor Who season 11 has another behind-the-scenes addition
Who is it? Sam Hoyle! BAFTA (below) confirms that Hoyle will be joining her former Broadchurch boss Chris Chibnall on the series, which shouldn’t be all that much of a shock given that she’s worked with him on a wide array of projects. Add to this the fact that Chibnall’s new Doctor Jodie Whittaker also is a part of that show, there will be a number of elements to this show that are going to feel very much similar to his former series — though granted, Doctor Who has a Tardis and we don’t remember Olivia Colman running around in that on Broadchurch. With that being said, we did have David Tennant on that show too so, doesn’t that count for something?
As for why Chibnall would want to continue to use so many familiar faces, both in terms of onscreen talent and also people behind the scenes, a big part of that has to do with comfort and trust. This is a man who is making a huge transition from a realistic show to a science fiction classic with a massive fanbase; it’s nice to work with some people who know what it is like working with you. They understand each other, and there is a tremendous value that does come along with that. This helps to turn things into more of a well-oiled machine; they won’t be doing the same things that they used to, but there’s an understanding there and they will know how to work with each other.
As for whether or not this is the end of Chibnall’s Broadchurch hires, we doubt it. Remember that we’re still pretty early on into the process at the moment right now and there is still plenty of time for some other familiar faces to enter the mix.
