Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Is Martin Henderson leaving?

Riggs -

After tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode there is one question that we’re left to wonder: Is Martin Henderson leaving? Are we done seeing Nathan Riggs on the show?

Ultimately, it’s probably a little bit early to know the answer to that one way or the other — yet, based on the end of the episode it certainly seems as though Nathan isn’t looking back. He actually stayed in California with Megan and his son, and seems intent on starting a new life with them there. It’s definitely not what we expected.

Yet, is Grey’s Anatomy ever about doing the expected? Since when is that when they done what you expect for them to? This is just something that is not their MO in the slightest. They love to unleash some big-time surprises on us. That is why we want to hold out hope that Riggs could come back at some point down the line.

Anyhow, for now it does appear that Henderson is done. Here’s what Shonda Rhimes said in a statement:

“I loved that we were able to give Riggs a happy ending worthy of his character and talent … As for Martin, this is not an ending for our relationship. He has been part of the Shondaland family since the pilot of Inside the Box and he will always be family. I can’t wait to find a new project to work with him on in the future.”

Maybe the unexpected thing here is that Riggs would leave to be with his former fiancée, given the notion that so many of us expected that he would end up with Meredith and for good reason. Henderson and Ellen Pompeo had great chemistry with each other! We were sure that this was going to work out and with that, we’re both rather shocked and saddened that it isn’t coming together.

For Henderson as an actor, what this does mean is that he has a chance to go off and pursue some other projects for the upcoming pilot season — there’s also a very good chance that we could end up seeing him down the road as a part of Rhimes’ new deal with Netflix.
