Supernatural season 13 episode 4 preview: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and grief
In the end, there are few things more frightening than emptiness, loneliness, and feeling as though you’ve got nothing left to fight for. Sam and Dean are struggling entering this episode still — they’ve spent a lot of time helping Lucifer’s son, and that is a good task for them. Yet, it’s also probably just a mask for them to hide some of the other problems that they’re going through in the aftermath of what happened to Mary and Castiel, let alone some other characters from the past. The part of Supernatural season 13 episode 4 that probably is the most frightening to us at CarterMatt is that these two brothers have lost so many people over the past thirteen years. It’s hard to know when the grief stops and the relief begins.
For more on “The Big Empty,” including how some of these feelings come about, take a look at the synopsis below:
THE LONG WAY HOME – When multiple patients of grief counselor Mia Vallens (guest star Rukiya Bernard) turn up dead, Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Jack (Alexander Calvert) investigate the mystery surrounding the murders and, each inadvertently, are forced to deal with unresolved grief of their own. John Badham directed the episode written by Meredith Glynn (#1304). Original airdate 11/2/2017.
It’s probably dangerous for one’s expectations to get excited about an episode just based on the synopsis below, but we’re more probably more excited for “The Big Empty” than any Supernatural episode so far this season. When the show does serious, heartfelt episodes they can be some of the best stuff that they do — they’re most effective because they venture in directions the show doesn’t often go in otherwise. If Supernatural season 13 episode 4 introduces new wrinkles to Sam and Dean we have not seen before, odds are we’ll be a happy camper by the time the end credits roll.
Here’s another bit of good news about this episode (one that may not be as depressing) — there’s a Misha Collins sighting!
