Is Wally West on Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl really a good idea?

Wally West

Last night on The Flashthe show delivered one of its biggest surprises this year — Wally West departed Central City! Keiynan Lonsdale’s character realized that with Barry back, there wasn’t really a place for him within the team anymore. As a result of that he went and saw Jesse Quick before decided to leave town for a while.

As we wrote last night there’s no clear sign as to whether or not Wally is going to be returning in the near future — it seems likely that we’ll see him again, but the entire CW superhero universe has created a rather-good problem for itself at this point. They’ve created a number of good characters, but in the process it doesn’t have enough room for many of them to have roles. That’s why The Flash has lost Wally, Jesse (who was never a regular), and Julian Albert this year; both Arrow and Supergirl are also overstuffed right now with cast members, and Legends of Tomorrow currently has a massive cast, as they always do.

How do you feature all of these characters within just four shows? Is there a place now for Wally on any of them?

We’ve seen a number of people on Twitter discussing how Wally should go now on Legends of Tomorrow — there’s even an article up about it over at ComicBook.com — and we’re not sure it’s the right fit. Wally is such a powerful character that he almost eliminates the purpose of many of the other Legends. He could just run around and stop everyone before Sara, Ray Palmer, and Nate would have to do anything. (Hot take — Legends of Tomorrow has been the best CW superhero show from like the midway point of season 2 on.) Even though Legends of Tomorrow has been a venue from the beginning of Arrow-verse characters who didn’t fit on other shows, sooner or later it’s going to be at capacity. We think that Supergirl would actually be a better fit since both the heroes and villains are more powerful over there — but other than a guest appearance, how do you include him? The show already has people like Winn who are being grossly under-served, and they haven’t even brought Chris Wood back yet as Mon-El.

Our solution for Wally

We don’t want to see Lonsdale go to another show where he’d get roughly the same story, if that, that he got on The Flash. Our preference would be to throw the character onto his own CW Seed animated series or maybe a six-episode show to air during the summer. This is something we wish the network would do more of in general to give smaller stories to some of its supporting characters. They get their moment in the sun and we get to see some different perspectives and voices. We know we’re getting Black Lightning later this year, but it’s not confirmed to be an Arrow-verse show and we’d like to see even more diversity. The CW does by and large a great job of that, but not always with the person at the top of the call sheet.
