Outlander season 3 episode 6 ratings: Another series record for ‘A. Malcolm’

Outlander season 3 episode 6 ratings

Did the one-week hiatus hurt the Outlander season 3 episode 6 ratings for Starz? Let’s just say the power of the print shop reigned supreme.

Our sentiment going into the hiatus was that it wouldn’t have much in terms of a negative effect on the numbers at all. Remember, you had a show gearing up for one of its biggest episodes to date in “A. Malcolm.” To go along with this, the extra week may have allowed some fans a chance to catch up who were behind an episode or two.

No matter the optics around the hiatus or the reason why more viewers were watching, it doesn’t matter. What does is that Outlander has once more set a new series record for itself! “A. Malcolm” drew 1.72 million viewers on Sunday, which is an improvement of more than 120,000 viewers from the most-recent episode of the show in “Freedom & Whisky.” It’s the second-best episode-to-episode improvement this season, and it’s actually more impressive than the best one. (There was an increase of over 150,000 viewers between episodes 2 and 3, but episode 2 was likely hampered by airing opposite the Emmys.) For those wondering about the 18-49 demographic another record was set here with a 0.4 rating — not that this matters as much to a network like Starz who doesn’t use advertisers.

Year to year, Outlander is now up 43% in total viewers from where they were in season 2 on average. In the demo, the increase is even higher at over 53%.

The ratings record once again validates both the level of enthusiasm out there for the print shop scene by most Outlander fans and the power of Starz’s publicity engine. The promotional campaign this season has paid off in spades, as more viewers are either discovering the show or choosing to watch it live rather than recording it, as they may have done in the past.

We know that we’ve reminded you of this at CarterMatt like a broken record time and time again, but this is just a small sampling of the overall Outlander viewership. There are more viewers watching the show via the app on the day new episodes launch, plus those watching via DVR or On-Demand in the days to follow. Hopefully by the end of the season Starz will release some more substantial data so that we can sink our teeth into more of this. The live+same-day ratings presented here are important because watching live is still, by our money, the premier viewing venue. If you can convince people in 2017 to sit down in front of their TV at a designated time you are doing something fantastic. Plus, it also offers up more opportunities to write articles highlighting the performance and advocating for more episodes.

Obviously, there are many other viewers watching the show around the world, but trying to consolidate some of those international viewers alongside those here in America is a challenge like no other.

We do think it’s worth checking out! “A. Malcolm” proved to be very much work all of the hype in terms of its storytelling and performances.
