Could Sex and the City recast Samantha Jones? Don’t count on it…
This time around, it’s coming from one of the strangest sources possible in Kim Cattrall! The former Sex and the City star was on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories recently, and as a part of her interview with the host she was suggesting that the producers of the show consider bringing someone else on board for whatever HBO wants to do next:
“It’s a great part … I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And [now another] actress should play it. Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones or a Hispanic Samantha Jones.”
Here’s the truth: That will never happen in a million years, and we just think that this is Cattrall being snarky more so than anything else to some of the critics who, for a long time, ridiculed the show for its lack of diversity among main characters. But, they can’t just completely alter the ethnicity of one of the main characters and keep the show within the main canon acting as though nothing is different and Cattrall likely knows this. Recastings mostly work when you keep most of the background around the character the same, but with a show as iconic as this, we just can’t see it working without the main four women.
Could there be a new Samantha Jones in a reboot?
Sure; there already was. Her name was Lindsey Gort, and she played the character on the second season of The Carrie Diaries on The CW. That show didn’t really materialize into much, and much of that had to do with the fact that it was a prequel-of-sorts (it was actually based more on the source material than the HBO show) that aired on a different network and, therefore, a different audience. Interestingly, we recently wrote here at CarterMatt about Gort within the context of another show in Lucifer.
We do wonder if HBO would consider rebooting the series for a new generation with four new women on different romantic adventures in New York, but it seems too early to do that now when the most recent movie isn’t that far in the rear-view mirror and everyone other than Cattrall seemed to be happy to go back and give the project one last hurrah to exorcise the demons from the pretty terrible second movie.
For the record, CarterMatt still contends that the series itself had a great ending — it was imperfect, but so was Carrie Bradshaw. This was the most accurate reflection of some of these characters and who they actually are in life than anything that we’ve seen to date where there have been attempts to tie together every loose end. Sex and the City wasn’t never meant to be tied up with a neat little bow where everyone lived happily ever after – this was a very real look at relationships and how people handle different situations (sometimes very badly) and that’s what we appreciated about the show. Every character was flawed.
